What's with Mukesh Ambani's suits?

Of course, I'll start with that. It's the most pressing issue here people. Seriously, can he not do better with all that money? I mean rich is an understatement for that guy. Rich feels self-conscious when associated with him. And this guy comes to his company's biggest launch in years wearing a suit that's most definitely been picked from ACP Pradyuman's 2013 Fall collection.

Oh, what a disaster. I mean if I were to be the richest person in India, I would roam around in gold and platinum suits. Yes, they would be hideous and I would be trolled aggressively on social media but who cares? I don't see you peasants owning one of them, do I?

Digressing a little bit here but today was also about Reliance Jio. Mukesh Ambani, at the company's AGM, re-entered the mobile communications scene with a bang. Perhaps changing the way information and broadcast work in the country. Reliance has not spoken about this since their marketing came up with the partly perverted partly genius tagline, "Karlo duniya mutthi mein."

For those who aren't in the know, Reliance has been keeping quite busy off late with a number of new products and services. Going beyond the "mutthi" and straight after their competition, they return with quality products at service rates unheard of till now. Mukesh Ambani, in his company's 42nd Annual General Meeting, wreaked such havoc that shares of Bharti Airtel fell by 9% and the Aditya Birla Group-owned Idea Cellular dropped as much as 11%. That's a combined loss of over Rs 12,000 crore in market capitalisation over a speech that lasted not more than an hour. Calling it an effort to fulfill the Digital India dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ambani said, "Jio is more than just a business. It is a commitment to enrich the life of every Indian... Jio’s mission is to meet this exploding need, to go from data shortage to data abundance.”

Ambani said the Jio service will be based on five pillars - network, devices, content, services and tariffs. But going beyond just flowery words, Jio's launch will be the biggest revolution at least as far as tariffs are concerned. Here are some of the announcements that totally disrupted the market and made consumers lose their minds.

1. Free local and roaming calls to any network. Lowest international call tariffs in the world.

2. Data tariffs to be as low as 5 paise per MB. 1/10th of what service providers charge right now. 

3. 25 percent more data for students. 

4. No surge pricing on public holidays, festivals and new years.

5. 1 million WiFi hotspots promised by mid-2017.

6. Unlimited data for customers at night.

7. 4G handsets with free connection for starting at as less as Rs 2,999. 

8. Starting 5th September, free data, calls and SMS till 31st December 2016.

9. Get a Jio SIM in 15 minutes if you have an Aadhar Card. 

But...

Cynics (like me) fear this may not live up to the hype created. Even though Ambani has clearly mentioned that Jio is still in the Beta phase, users have been complaining about call drops and abysmal data speeds that don't even match 3G standards. Last week itself, Ambani mentioned that there were 5 crore call failures on their network. Reliance Jio is locked in a dispute with the incumbents on the point of interconnect. It has also accused incumbents of not releasing sufficient interconnection ports during its test run of services. The incumbents have dubbed its network testing as an effort to bypass regulations. The matter is apparently under investigation by both TRAI and DoT.  Which is why Ambani is providing Jio services for free till the 31st of December as it tests its networks and removes the bugs. After dropping a bomb of a press conference, Reliance really needs to back it up with quality service. Something Reliance will be held responsible for come 2016. Until then, frustrating times are expected to continue for Jio users. 

What will other service providers do now...

Other service providers like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea will now have to slash their data earnings to be in the race. They will also most probably go all out shelling big bucks in the upcoming spectrum auctions to beat Jio. Giving data at throwaway prices is one thing but to make voice calls completely free spells for some serious changes in the spectrum. Airtel has apparently already slashed their prices but we are still awaiting clarity on it.
